– Music From Mathematics - Selector Series One (Demo Mix)
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

When Mr. Moss and I spoke about the idea of an official Mathematics Recordings mix CD, I was eager to pull my entire collection of the label’s work and hit the record button. Here’s the first pass of the recording live and unedited - all wax, 2 technics & one jank mixer.

While this wasn’t the version that made the actual release, I feel it’s a nice retrospective of some of the label’s best. But more importantly, it’s got some of that basement funk. Please enjoy…

JUNO’s Selector Series One review

juno review.

For those with an open-minded approach to electronic music, the output of Chicago’s Mathematics label has always been essential listening. While clearly steeped in the traditions of the Windy City’s famous house scene and the far-sighted electronic pulse of Detroit techno, Mathematics is just as likely to release something off-the-wall and interesting as straight-up jack or murky dancefloor bounce. Much credit should go to label boss Jamal Moss, better known as Hieroglyphic Being.

Despite operating around the fringes of the Chi-town scene for some 15 years, Mathematics compilations are few and far between. Sure, there have been the essential Music From Mathematics CDs, but little else. In fact, this non-stop live vinyl session from fellow Chicagoan Daryl Cura is in fact the label’s first official mix CD. That it’s something of a delight isn’t much of a surprise. Cura wisely uses the opportunity to touch on many of Mathematics’ disparate themes, and over the course of a spellbinding hour, picks and blends some real highlights from the label catalogue. There’s the bittersweet downtempo piano vibes of Bocca Grande, the future space-disco of Les Aeroplanes, a dash of Metro Area on Smack (Audio Atlas’ brilliant “Alaska”), touchy-feely techno and tech-house from Alessandro Izzo and Marcello Napoletano, sprightly synthscapes from Vagin Brei, and even a clutch of far-sighted floorfillers (the brilliance of Liverpudlian newcomer John Heckle). Oh, and indispensible space-jazz from Gentl3man.

It’s in parts delightfully melodic, achingly melancholic, indescribably heavy, thrillingly futuristic and unashamedly backward looking – everything great electronic music should be, basically. Cura’s mix is impeccable, and perfectly encapsulates what Mathematics is about. If you’ve yet to discover the label, it’s the perfect place to start.

In 1996, the 1st Mathematics record was released on an extremely limited 12” that was only available for purchase directly from Jamal Moss’ backpack – so rare that its existence is almost mythical. 5 years later in 2001, an Africans With Mainframes release (MATHEMATICS 001) marks the label’s launch into world recognition. With over 50 releases to date from veteran artists such as Steve Poindexter, Adonis, and of course label boss Hieroglyphic Being, Mathematics has also become an imprint known to catapult careers introducing many outstanding producers like Marcello Napoletano, Andreas Gehm, Analogous Doom, Takeshi Kouzuki, Contra Communem Opinionem, and more recently John Heckle & Kuba Sojka. Here on the label’s first official mix CD, compiled by fellow Chicagoan Daryl Cura (Eargasmic Recordings), is a retrospective that showcases the deep sound it continues to champion today ranging from deep techno, atmospheric acid tracks, experimental electronic jazz, electro and house influences. Recorded live straight to tape without the powers of today’s computer software and utilizing a simple set up of 2 turntables and an old school mixer, this stunning 60+ minute mix takes a journey through the compelling catalog and work of Mathematics Recordings.
1. Bocca Grande - Adlibitum 2. Adonis presents late invitation - The Invite 3. Les Aeroplanes - Ils Disent Que L’ Orient Est Rouge 4. Steve Poindexter presents Alessandro Izzo - II Fragile 5. America’s Largest Dance Music Distributor/Importer Re-Opens To The Public On July 1st

Groove Distribution, opened in March of 1999, selling import and domestic dance music to independent record stores around the country and direct to the public via mail order. From the beginning, the warehouse was open to the public during limited retail hours on Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons. In the fall of 2006 we moved to a new location and suspended our limited retail hours—though customers could still pick up orders placed online at groovedis.com or by phone. Now, almost four years later, we are re-opening our warehouse to the general public. And not just for six hours a week like before, but for five days a week.

Starting Tuesday, July 5th, we will (re)open our doors to the public. We will be open Tuesday through Thursday Noon to 7PM, Friday Noon to 9PM and on Sunday afternoons Noon to 3PM. Come browse over 5,000 square feet of dance music (and more) records and CDs with over 15,000 different titles. We carry imported and domestic releases from a wide range of labels and genres, including house, electronica, downtempo, funky breaks, dubstep, & bass, nujazz, cosmic disco, re-edits, soul and funk reissues, electro, mash-ups and more.

We are having a “Pre” Re-Opening Party on Thursday, July 1st, from 6:00 PM until Midnight where some of Chicago’s top DJs and our staff will provide the night’s soundtrack. DJs scheduled to appear include Ricardo Miranda, Anthony Nicholson, Jamal Moss (a.k.a. Hieroglyphic Being), Hakim Murphy, Chuck Wren, dcee, and Dirk V. Beverages will be provided along with gifts, sales and specials and that night marks the weeklong return of the “Records By The Pound” sale.

Up until our July 5th re-opening you are still welcome to pick up your online and phone orders in the reception area during our normal business hours Tuesday through Friday.

We hope to see you on Thursday, July 1st, for our party!

Thanks for the business (and support).

JUNO’s Selector Series One review
Groove Dis - Re-Opening Party July 1st!

About:

Daryl Cura . dcee . DeeCoy

[Music Researcher / DJ / Producer / Designer / Vinyl Pusher]

Product of Chicago, a huge Cubs fan, absolutely in love with the Pequod's Pizza lunch special, salt & pepper fish fillet from chinatown, and friends i never see...

dcee
, the owner of Mahasa Music, Eargasmic Recordings, and a few 'lo-key' labels, has created his own distinct sound which ranges from ultra smooth Deep House to hard hitting electronic dance music. For a time spanning almost 2 decades, he’s been spinning across the country with stops abroad through Europe and Asia with appearances at Berlin’s Love Parade, Manila's ultra club Embassy, as well as a closeout Live PA at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival. As DeeCoy, he has recorded on such heavyweight labels as Int’l Dj Gigolo Records as ‘The Dirty Criminals’ with his partners Traxx & Hieroglyphic Being, Antennae Int’l with James T. Cotton (Ghostly/Spectral), and his own (now defunct) Udek Music.

Eargasmic Recordings, however, is his true love. The label was started in 2002 and has become a niche house imprint with a mystique similar to those of the Deep House Detroit labels like Harmonie Park, Sound Signature, etc. dcee’s brought in several artists onto the Eargasmic line-up : Glenn Underground, The Sun God aka Jamal Moss, Gene Hunt, K Alexi, Genetix, Abicah Soul, and has introduced several up-and-coming producers such as Bjak and Chicago Skyway to the House Music world.
